Westchase Orthopaedics can now offer the full spectrum of care for your individual joint problem. Physical therapy, medication therapy, minimally invasive surgery, regenerative medicine therapy, and major joint reconstruction are all now available at a facility you trust. Please come talk to Dr. Horan or Dr. Lao to see what plan can be made for you. Call our Stem Cell Answer Line at (813)-792-8788.

Stem cell therapy is a revolutionary treatment approach that focuses on curing conditions as opposed to simply masking them. The goal is to use the body’s own tools and resources to expedite the healing process or to prompt the body to heal itself when it is otherwise unable to do so. In recent years there have been rapid developments in the use of the body’s own cells for accelerated healing of injuries and in reducing the pain and effects associated with osteoarthritis (OA). Here at Westchase Orthopaedics, we have been using regenerative cells since 2004. In the beginning all that was available was Platelet Rich Plasma(PRP). In recent years, bone marrow aspirate cells, and adipose mesenchymal stem cells have become available. These are YOUR stem cells.

What are Stem Cells?

Stem cells allow our bodies to build new tissue. They also replace the many specialized cells in our body if they are worn out and damaged. All of this makes stem cells extremely important in the natural process of healing. There are many types of stem cells, and each type plays a different role in the body as we grow and develop. Currently the three most common types of stem cells used in regenerative medicine are: fat (adipose tissue), bone marrow, and amniotic. Both adipose and bone marrow aspirate are harvested from your own body. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) found in bone marrow and adipose tissue are unspecialized cells with the ability to mature and differentiate into multiple types of tissue including cartilage, bone, tendon, ligament, and muscle.

What cells do you use and why?

At Westchase Orthopaedics, we prefer adipose mesenchymal stem cells. They are much easier to obtain than bone marrow cells, as we can aspirate them through a 1/4 inch incision in the belly. A study out of cell transplant(2013) also showed adipose contains 500 times more pluripotent cells than the equivalent volume of bone marrow. If fat is unavailable, bone marrow from the pelvis is the next source of stem cells.

How do you get the cells?

The fat cells are removed from your abdomen with a small needle. Bone marrow, if needed, can be removed from your pelvis. Both of these can be done with local anesthesia in the clinic, but many times we do these with mild sedation, in the surgery center.

Regenerative medicine treatments such as Adipose aspiration, bone marrow aspirate concentrate and PRP injections have been proven to be safe with a low complication rate; however, they are not covered by insurance. As part of your consultation, we will complete a physical evaluation and review of your medical records. The chances of achieving a successful outcome increase through patient selection and patient education.
